Has anyone let their post colic baby cry it out to get better sleep out of them? My 3 1/2 month old is colic free. I think he cries a lot b/c he is always tired. He only sleeps 40 min at a time for naps and is up 3 times at night. Sometimes it takes me a long time to get him back to sleep. I'm considering the CIO since we are severely sleep deprived.

We did cry it out...sorta kinda. I havent read the books on it, but I would lay her down...let her cry (I always gave myself 25 mins...and if she wasn't stopped crying by then, I'd go in there and soothe her, then we'd start over...usually by the first or 10 mins into the second time she'd be asleep) We did that on a regular basis. I only gave myself 25 mins because everytime she wailed it killed me, but I was also not being able to handle not getting any sleep. So i chose the lesser of two evils, and didn't go in there if it KILLED me. Sometimes I'd have to step outside or take a quick shower or something, just so I didnt have to feel bad hearing her cry. it worked... She was getting up 7-9 times a night at night, and screaming bloody murder everytime i layed her down. Now when i lay her down for naps or bedtime, she never cries...she either goes right to sleep, or plays with her stuffed animals and babbles till she falls asleep. She sleeps from 8pm- 7am everynight. (unless she is sick, or teething...then she might wake up once or twice and cry...then soothe herself back to sleep)

Mallory is 5 months old and gets up at least 3-4 times a night and has never slept more than 30 minutes for naps. We trie CIO several times but with no luck. She is still pretty fussy too though so that could be why it's not working for us. Every baby is different though, you just have to try what you are comfortable with.

my daughter is getting to be post colic, she is 6 months now but she cries everytime i put her down for naps but guess what for only 3 minutes so i was wasting my time rocking her etc. try to sing the same song no matter what when you put the baby down and just walk away. im sure the baby wont cry for long, sometimes its us that messes up their natural sleep patterns and they would of just cried a bit and went to sleep also they wake up and cry after 30 minutes or 40 but thats natural sleep patterns and if you wait 5 minutes of crying the baby will be back to sleep another 40 minutes, try it. I also never go in at night unless shes crying more than 15 minutes and she never cries this long...try it!

You just have to find the thing your baby likes, we have all tried a thousand different methods and nothing truelly worked completely it just would semi contain the screaming. Wedid swaddling for Olivia and that wored well. For the constipation we use glycerin suppositories and I just cut a smaller lengthwise peice off the side Also yes we trie the CIO and I don't have the strength, I cry with her and when she starts crying mama I done, I cave. She is very pigheaded though and if she does not want i that way she could go for hours. I hoose my battes carefully with her and that is not one I a illing to indure.Ok my eyboard battery is dying gotta quit typing now.

We just started this two nights ago, and it is going GREAT!! We used Ferber, plus a few things I read in the Sleepeasy book..Ruby was waking up almost every hour, and required a lot from us to sleep (bouncing on a yoga ball, swaddle, hairdryer, pacifier, etc..and had to be dead asleep when we set her down, or her eyes would pop open and she'd cry..this would sometimes take an hour or two!!). I think the crazy routine was just left over from her colic days, and she got used to it. She has been kicking A S S now...she only cries a few minutes, and then goes right to sleep!! It is miraculous!! And she is napping so much better too! I am a HUGE Ferber fan now!!!!

How old are the babies that are being sleep trained? DS is 3 1/2 months but not really colicky anymore. We think he's just plain tired. Is he too young for sleep training?

We too used the Ferber method for Nathan. We tried letting him CIO when he was about 3 1/2, mostly out of desperation. We were all soooo tired. Nathan would sleep no more than 45 minutes at a time, day or night. When we tried it at this time, it didn't work. He just cried and cried and cried. So we stopped and tried again one month later at 4 1/2 months old. It worked awesome! He learned to fall asleep on his own in a matter of a few days with very little crying. I think each baby is different so you might just have to try it to find out. Just set a plan that you are comfortable with and give it a whirl. If it doesn't work, wait a few weeks, and try it again. In all the sleep books I have read, I know something changes in a babies sleep pattern after they are 4 months old so you might want to take that into consideration. I really liked the Ferber method because I felt like I was doing something instead of just letting Nathan cry forever. Some people are really against CIO methods, but with Nathan I really saw no other option. Good Luck!

I agree with Steph about Ferber...it really has worked well for us. Ruby is 4 and 1/2 months..out doctor would not let us try it until she was 4 months, but then she got croup and an ear infection, so he made us wait..he wanted us to go "cold turkey" and I just could not do that..I like Ferber, because there is an exact method, that includes going in to check in on them, and let them know you are there. I can't tell you how well this has worked for us..naps are still up and down, but night time has been a full 180.

Someone above said "I'm sure she/he [the baby] won't cry for long." Ummmm, does this person actually have a baby with colic??? I can't just leave my daughter to cry it out. She actually falls asleep much faster when I go back to soothe her back to sleep.
My pediatrician recommended two books: * Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child (which talks about a lot of strategies, including CIO techniques) * The No-Cry Sleep Solution
I'm JUST starting sleep training, and my daughter is still colicky. The best place to start is an early bedtime if you aren't already doing that. Seriously. Start the going-to-bed routine, including the feeding as early as 6-6:30 and just try to get your little one to sleep. Go in to soothe back to sleep as needed. I would write more, but the books are going to more thorough than anything I can write here. Order on Amazon!
