My son is 9 weeks old now (3 weeks adjusted - he was a 34 week preemie) and has incredibly bad gas, reflux and colic that lasts from about 1PM to midnight. (I'm breastfeeding but have already cut out gassy veggies and dairy.) He won't sleep in his bouncer, swing, crib, bassinet, or anywhere but my or my husband's chest UNTIL we tried laying him on his tummy to sleep in his bassinet - magic! He sleeps beautifully (still occasionally fussy but at least he's SLEEPING), but I'm terrified of SIDS and feel like I'm a horrible mother for succumbing to this route. (By the way, we only lay him on his tummy during the daytime naps. He still is co-sleeping with us on my chest at night.) There's nothing in his bassinet that could cause a suffocation hazard (extra blankets, etc), but still.... Has anyone else gone the route of tummy sleeping to restore your sanity (and the baby's - I mean, the kid needs to sleep!)?? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I know I'm going to get a few responses indicating that I'm basically killing my child, but I'm hoping also to find out if anyone else would confess to doing this? My son has excellent head control and can lift his head and turn it from side to side while on his tummy already, but can't roll over front to back yet, which makes me nervous.

My son (now 12 months, and HAPPY!) had HORRIBLE, horrible colic and slept, ohhhh, NEVER!!
I always put him on his back, because I totally had SIDS paranoia too, but he slept better on his side, so I started doing that around 2 months.
I am an educated person ( an emergency room RN, in fact) and I say, whatever works.
If it makes to feel better, invest in an AngelCare MOnitor- I had one and it made me feel so much better!
They do say that the risk of SIDS is *increased* with belly sleeping, but I do not think you are "killing your child" if you do this, AT ALL. My sister and I were all placed on our bellies to sleep, in a crib full of bumpers and blankets, and came out just fine.
Ps- around 3 months, when he could roll over- he rolled right to his belly, and slept at least 4 hours straight (heaven for us), and he still sleeps on his belly now!

I have experienced the same tug of war of placing my daughter (3mths) on her tummy to sleep. So like Amy I tried putting her to sleep on her side and it helps of course until she rolls over onto her back. Her little hands constantly flare and wake her it is impossible for her to sleep alone in her own crib on her back. I recently started swaddling her again. She use to struggle and fight tooth and now to break free of being swaddled so I stopped for a month. Tried it again last night and really seemed to help she didn't even try to resist. I think Dr.s and everyone else should lay off on all the "back to sleep" propaganda I understand it probably has reduced SIDS for some babies but just 20 years ago it was "tummy sleep" they were preaching and most of us survived. We shouldn't feel guilty for trying to comfort our children and help them and us sleep to maintain some sort of sanity by "tummy sleep".

My 2.5 week old is getting colicky, and I used a tummy position to hold him. He stopped crying. Then I layed him on a firm ottoman on his swaddling blanket and he went straight to sleep without a peep.

My son is 6 weeks he has been sleeping on his tummy for about three days now and it is great!!! My son also has great head control he basically holds his own head, moves it from side to side, stands up, he can push himself up a little.I say do what you have to only you know what is best for your child:)

Tummy sleeping seems to help a lot of colic babies. My mom would only be able to get my colic baby to sleep when she would try to help me and it seemed my daughter loved it! I think you should do whatever you can to get the baby to sleep and not worry about what others think! When it comes to SIDS the cause is still really not known! My husband had a baby brother die from sids. His mom told me back then they didn't know much but she always suspected cough medicine that they were giving kids back then. Back then most all babies slept on their tummys and loved it! I can tell you one thing, I suspect its all the flame retardants in the mattresses! There has been a lot of research coming out suggesting that the chemicals that our mattresses are soaked in could be causing the SIDS, notice the increase in SIDS is related to an increase in flame retardants. Nothing you can do about that issue but worry. They also make a GREAT monitor that clips to your babies diaper called the snuza. that way they can sleep anywhere and are monitored. I used it and its highly reccommended! I hope you find people here more supportive than other baby sights. Hopefully people aren't so quick to judge.

Our colicky baby turned himself onto his tummy at 7 months an d it was like he became a new baby. He still feeds once in the night but goes straight back to sleep and new we have to sometimes wake him at 730am. A far cry from when we took turns holding him from 3am and then he was awake from 5am screaming. SIDS is real but I told my wife our baby was in danger of us being in a car accident more so than the risk of SIDS!!! If they take the tummy do it. If not and they are under six months then swaddle them tightly. Hang in there mums and dads because we felt like we losing our mind but now our son is so gorgeous, calm, smiling and content. It does pass but I know if you are in the middle of it its hard to see the end. Just take one day at a time.
