Brooklyn did the same thing, and we came to find out she had a double ear infection. We couldnt figure out why she wasnt EATING and why she was sleeping horribly. If hes not wanting a bottle, do you think maybe hes ready for more food besides just cereal?? It might be worth trying to give him something different. I noticed with Brooklyn when i started giving her things she could eat herself....tiny pieces of wheat bread or whatever, she started eating more. It probably is worth a trip to the ped. though. Better safe than sorry. whenever i dont know whats going on with Brookie, i take her in. It usually ends up being nothing, but a few times ive been glad i took her in. (like with the ear infections) hope things work out, and he starts eating better!! If nothing else, going to the ped. will ease YOUR mind a bit

Thanks guys! He was up to about 26-28oz a day and has just suddenly dropped like this. He is taking a few more things other than cereal, like fruits and veggies, but again with all the tummy trouble we've had I am afraid to give him too much too fast. I guess I am paranoid that something will go wrong if i try to give him something other than baby food. I think my gut feeling is to just go ahead and have him checked....sure can't hurt huh?!?! Kari you asked if he'd been stuffy, he hasn't had any cold type symptoms. I did go ahead and give him some motrin before bed tonight...I figure if it's an ear infection or teething, this may help. Thanks again for all the suggestions and concern. I'll update you guys once I know more. Audrey

omg, after dinner every night i have to strip Brooklyn down and put her in the kitchen sink, and spray her with the sink hose thingy. lol She is a mess. She LOVES to take handfuls of food and rub it thru her hair, im not sure what thats about. She even tries to rub it in her eye!! She ALWAYS wants to feed herself, so i get her the toddler meals that are mini raviolis and stuff and cut them up small, and she picks them up and feeds herself. She prefers this way! Shes much rather feed herself. Unless of course I'm eating something yummy then she attacks me and tries to get at my food!

Well girls, since I last posted, things have been a little crazy around my house. Garren has been sick with bronchiolitis! He started really going down hill over the weekend before Christmas and of course the pedi's office was closed so we weren't really sure what to do. We didn't want to take him to the ER. We didn't feel he was an "emergency" and didn't want to be sicker when we left than when we got there. We finally went to the pedi yesterday and he was diagnosed with "viral" bronchiolitis. He's never run any fever...just coughing his head off and not sleeping well at all. We had finally started sleeping thru the night and then he got sick. We are only on neb treatments with albuterol and doing those four times a day. I so far can't see that they are making much of a difference. I still feel like he needs to be on some sort of cough syrup but I guess I don't want to suppress the cough. Anyway, that's why the diet has been so poor lately. His pedi said as long as he's urinating once or more a day he's fine! So let's hope he starts getting better soon. I just wanted to update you guys. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas!!!!! Audrey, the alubuterol is just a bronchodilator. Are they giving him anything to help get the mucous up?? What about an expectorant? Anything to thin out the secretions? Sorry, this is the therapist in me talking so I am probably inundating you with questions. Yes, albuterol will work, but it is really only to relax the airways, if he has a lot of thick secretions, he needs something to help get it up. I would go back to doing the hot showers and clapping on his back like I said before if the doctor doesn't give you any other solutions.

Yah, like Pam said it wont do much to bring the mucous up. We just went thru that....well, we STILL ARE going thru that with both girls. The coughing I've been using the vicks vapor machine. Its not a vaporizer or humidifier it just has those little menthol strips you put on the thing, and it heats it up and fills the room with menthol. It works really well for both girls. The only downside is it has a nightlight on it that lights up the room. So i have to leave it running (it will last 8 hours) for 2-3 hours in the room with the door closed before Brookie goes to sleep in there, then turn it off when i lay her down, because she cant sleep with lights on. She likes it dark with no stimulus. Vicks vapor rub for babies is great too. Ive had really bad luck with expectorant's with Mya and Brookie. Mya gets cold induced asthma...so we have liquid albuterol on hand. She always gets really really sick, fever and cough with just a cold, because it goes right into her lungs. The fever is always just her body fighting it off. Never too high, just enough to make her uncomfy. I always take both girls in the shower and beat on their back and chests. Okay.....well, not beat, you know.....it moves things around and gets the phlegm moving. I avoid giving Mya milk products of course, and if they are both really bad and running noses, coughing....i push the fluids. I give pedialyte to Brooklyn in a bottle....the more liquids, the better. It thins out the mucous. I've been told many times...."A cold treated lasts 7-10 days, a cold untreated lasts 3-5" I dont know if there is truth to that, but ive found with Mya if i give her all the cough meds and all that, it doesnt get her better quicker. I give her tylenol just to help make her comfy but other than that i just give her lots of fluids, shower steaming, vaporizers, vicks vapor rub....and if she has a coughing fit sometimes taking her outside in the cold air at night helps calm it down. Hope ya'll feel better soon!!! Its no fun with stuffy noses, coughing...makes everyone miserable. Brooklyn is still coughing at night

Actually the truth in the saying is that a treated cold lasts 7-10 days, an untreated cold lasts a week. Essentially the same time, you are just treating the symptoms and doing "palliative" care- making it more bearable. Masking symptoms until they go away on their own. You can't give medicine to a virus, only a bacteria. That's why a doctor will tell you that if it's viral you just have to let it run it's course but if it's bacterial they get a little more ancy. Buuuutttt.... doctors will give meds, don't get me wrong, they have been known to do that. Like infections, or if we, as parents, are pushy!!

Yah....I'm sure the saying has been said a thousand different ways, by a thousand different people. Thats why i said...who knows if there is any truth to it. I just know what works for my kids. And yes....even though you can't treat a virus, there ARE dr's that still give meds. I was just talking to an ER dr the other day that told me that 80% or more of ear infections will go away on its own. There is a very small percentage of ear infections that REALLY need meds or they wont go away. BUT, there are lots of people (I have been guilty of it myself) that really push the dr's into giving meds for ear infections because its either meds, or deal with a screaming child. Its amazing how desperate a screaming kid, and seeing your baby in pain will make you!!! All the antibiotics will do is make it go away faster. When Mya went in for an ear infection a few months back thats what they told us. They gave us a prescription for amoxicillin and told us that we could fill it or not, it was up to us. Of course....we filled it. (bad mommy) The scary part about using antibiotics when they arent necessary and not finishing the full treatment (im also guilty of that....*cringe* i know..i know...) is so many things are now becoming totally resistant. That UTI that Brooklyn had.....the reason it got so out of hand, and put her in the hospital for the febrile seizure, they now explained to me was because of a "super bug" kind of bacteria. It was resistant to a few kinds of usual antibiotics that they prescribe. (It was resistant to any sulfur based antibiotics) That is the reason why she had taken them for 2 days, then suddenly got a high fever and sooo sick. They werent doing a darn thing for that particular bug. I myself am adding to the problem by not finishing meds, and overabusing them. We all are. Its hard not to. The nurse told me exactly that. It wasn't Brooklyn's little body that was having the problem, it was this HUGE problem that we all have with antibiotic abuse thats creating these super bugs, that are getting harder and harder to manage.

My parents were really extreme, to the point of medical neglect, about *not* taking us to the doctor (I broke my wrist in second grade, and they did nothing for it, other than giving me a homemade bandana sling). Though I am far more rational about the need for proper medical care and checkups, I tend toward not medicating myself, if it can be avoided. My husband and I both have cast-iron constitutions, so if we do get sick, you *know* it was a hell of a bug that got us, and it won't hang around long. That having been said, it's a balancing act, trying to decide when to medicate your sick child, especially when they've had major problems. But I desperately wanted to avoid being "that" preemie mom, so we've tried to let Nature take its course whenever possible, without putting Gavin at unnecessary risk. He's been off all scrips now for months, and the strongest thing we'll give him at home is Children's Motrin/Tylenol for teething.
Having worked for an ambulance chasing b a s t a r d of a lawyer, I can tell you that doctors walk a tightrope, trying to avoid lawsuits from schmucks like him, so many of them have become reactionary about prescibing antibiotics, even when they know they're not indicated. It's sad, really, because it helps contribute to the misuse, and ultimately, to resistance. When the Big Bad Cootie finally comes to get us, what will we take to get rid of it? Chicken soup?

Brooklyn is a weird one. Anytime we eat (at home or out) when she puts something in her mouth, she will stick her finger in there with it and MOOOOOOO. I swear to god. My child moos like a cow. .....and LOUD. She will put the food in her mouth and sit there with a serious expression going "mooooooo" People all stare at us...while I'm sitting there whispering "Brooklyn!!! Stop that! Stop moo'ing...or atleast stop moo'ing so loudly!!...." People look at me like..."are you serious? is that kid really moo'ing? ?" I dont know WHERE the heck she decided to start doing this from. I'm thinking maybe its because i always told her "mmmmmmm" When i gave her bites, and somehow she turned that into mooooooo??? Who knows, but its always a hilarious event when our family goes to eat
