Hello all!
New to the forums and a new mommy.
I just got back from my chiropractor... after asking us how everything was going we mentioned that our baby still suffers from colic and we think acid reflux (luckily with some improvement in the colic over the last month) and he suggested a few adjustments might do him wonders. I looked around google today and did find some promising results from a search of 'infant chiropractic' and was hoping to see if anyone has ever tried it.
Here's my story...
My DS was a very large baby, weighing in at 9lbs 2 weeks early. My OB suggested inducing because she was afraid he might get over 10lbs. Was a long and difficult delivery and resulted in a lot of stress for my back which was already kind of bad with mild scoliosis and herniated discs. Not too long after getting home I started to get horrible pains in my back in between the shoulder area (around the bra line). It would be a near incapacitating pain with nausea and on severe cases, vomiting. I was referred to a chiropractor by a friend who had glowing reviews and I have seen steady improvement. (woo!)
All the while the little one is suffering from horrible colic. He's crying and screaming. I'm crying and screaming. There were times when all I wanted to do was hide from the world (still are times!). I tried everything with a few mild successes here and there but nothing seemingily a long-term cure. Gripe water did nothing, gas drops did nothing, sitting on the toilet seat with a steamy shower and bouncing him only worked for 15 minutes maybe. Dryer, washing machine. The things that did seem to work at least decently well were swaddling and a bouncer with a white noise maker. Nights at least he did sleep with wakes for bottle and changing, but only in a swing.
We had maybe a 15 day half break, he seemed to be turning into a happy baby, for joy! We managed to get him sleeping in his crib at nights (we had to, the swing broke!), he was starting to smile more and getting chatty. But now it's almost like it was, with little glimpses of happy baby through the screaming. Over the last few weeks he started spitting up gobs, almost his full 4oz feeding and he always seemed to be hungry and then spitting up all over. I was just at my wit's end. Almost feel like crying all over just thinking of it. There he is screaming and crying and I'm trying not to and holding him, and walking all over, and singing, and then he spits up probably 3 ounces all over my back and hair. So much for trying not to cry!
So one of the nurses at our pediatricians suggested starting him on a few teasthingys of cereal, maybe he wasn't filling himself up on formula and was gorging. That only brought back the worst of his colic symptoms. Three days of hell, I tell you. Stopped the cereal and started feeding him less and more frequently. It seemed to help the spitting up slightly, but it was still quite a bit... only less and more frequently, heh.
The last two days I have put phone books under his crib mattress at the head to give it a slight incline. Yesterday he spit up not at all, still with his normal fussiness, but no spit up. Today the chiropractor gave him an adjustment and he still has the phone books under his mattress. I don't expect to see miracle results right away, but Doc Chiro said he had a colicky daughter and adjusted her and it did wonders. So I can only hope!
So, it does make sense to me that it might help, if his spine was out of wack like mine, it could cause uncomfortable pain and loss of stomach control, ( Like son like mother? ) which would certainly cause fussing and all the spitting up.
Anyway, I really wanted to share in hopes that it might help anyone else going through it also and to see if anyone else has heard about the infant adjustment thingy. Also for thoughts, opinions, and supporting e-hugs.
Oh, and DS is now 4 months and 2 weeks old (already feels like it's been a year!) weighing a hefty 20lbs and is a whopping 27 inches tall, was breastfed to start but ended up being lactose intolerant and put on soy formula.
Oof, that ended up being long and ranty. Thanks for reading!
